Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby and we are pleased to announce that they will be our matchday Charity Partner at our Exiles Day on Sunday 1st May for the crucial Aviva Premiership fixture against Harlequins (kick-off 3pm).
Through the power of rugby, the charity funds life-changing projects across the UK and Ireland, helping thousands of disabled and disadvantaged children and young people. Working closely with the rugby community, from grass roots clubs to international rugby stars, the sport gives Wooden Spoon its values of passion, integrity, teamwork and fun.
Due the phenomenal support Wooden Spoon receives from the rugby community and the public, the charity has helped over a million children and young people through more than 650 projects, raising over £23 million since being founded in 1983.
Wooden Spoon funds a range of projects, which are not just rugby focused. It is one of the country’s largest funders of respite and medical treatment centres, sensory rooms, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas and community based programmes.
One such community programme is the HITZ project, which is invaluable in providing a direct route for young people to return to learning, boost their self-confidence and find employment. Working out of all 12 Premiership Rugby clubs, the London Irish project is based at the New Directions Centre in Reading. The Hitz project uses Rugby to support young people that need a second chance in life to hopefully turn their life’s around and to give them a positive outlook on in the future. - “Through the funding we receive from Wooden Spoon and the other partners we are able to empower young people to regain control of their lives and begin to fulfil their potential” – Andrew Arter – London Irish HITZ officer.
