Lovejoy Chawatama enjoyed a sold 50-minute display in the first round of the Premiership Rugby Cup against Gloucester on Saturday.

“It has been a long pre-season, 13 weeks. It is good to be out there playing with the boys, the squad has been working hard on everything, obviously we conceded a few points, but there are a lot of positives to take out of this game, scoring a lot of points at Kingsholm is great and doesn’t happen very often.”

Having come off a disappointing result over in Cork against Munster a week ago, there was certainly areas to improve on, which Chawatama eludes to.

“After last week’s second half performance, the coaches spoke to us and challenged us to be more physical in everything that we do. We want to be getting better every week. We know we can get better; our line-out, scrum and our maul are improving and that is what we are working towards.”

Preparations for round 2 now begin, with Harlequins visiting the Madejski Stadium on Saturday 28 September.

“As with every game there are positives and negatives to take away from it. We will review this in more detail and work out what the drivers are for this week, but scoring 49 points at Kingsholm, a notoriously difficult place to play, is pleasing so it was good to do that.”

Exiles supporters again travelled in their numbers to support the team, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Lovejoy and his team-mates.

“They are always the 24th player, they are always there wherever we go They are diehard supporters and we really appreciate their support. Please keep supporting us and we will see you all on Saturday at the Madejski.”
