London Irish Director of Rugby Nick Kennedy was pleased with his side’s 19-0 victory over Doncaster Knights in the opening fixture of the Greene King IPA Championship.

Kennedy, who enjoyed a stellar playing career with the Exiles, began his reign in positive fashion and was keen to emphasise the importance of improvement going into next weekend’s contest with Richmond.

Speaking to LITV post-match, Kennedy said: “I was very pleased with the performance, particularly in defence as Doncaster were a very good side and made it difficult for us.

“We had difficult conditions to contend with in the rain and I’m pleased to see the things that we worked on in pre-season coming into practice. We have a few things that we’ll need to put right this week ahead of Richmond,” he added.

Last season’s runners-up Doncaster rallied until the bitter end, but they were unable to find a way through a resolute defensive line led by an experienced pack. Tries from Tom Fowlie and Asaeli Tikoirotuma were enough to secure the spoils for Irish.

“Declan Danaher works extremely hard on defence and the boys worked really hard out there,” said Kennedy, 34.

“They were good in the collision and were quickly ready for the next tackle, an aspect of the game we are very pleased with," he added.

With Richmond next up for Irish, Kennedy is keen to see his side improve, saying: “For us we just want to keep getting better and better – there are a few things that we need to work on and we’ll look to put things right on Monday morning.”
