RAF servicemen to attempt Guinness World Record at this Sunday’s game

London Irish’s Aviva Premiership fixture against Saracens will see RAF servicemen attempting a Guinness World Record at half-time as part of the RAF’s centenary celebrations.

Two members of the Horus 7s, a rugby sevens team created in 2015 after RAF Corporal Rob Bugden suffered life-changing injuries following a parachuting accident in the USA, will take on the challenge of the most drop-goals in three minutes. The record is currently held by Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell who achieved 29 drop goals.

Corporal Bugden was in the process of setting up a sevens team for the Parachute Training School at RAF Brize Norton before his plans were halted due to his accident.

In his honour Corporal Bugden’s peers founded the Horus 7s, Horus aptly meaning the Egyptian God of the air, and the team have raised money for a variety of charities that have been pivotal to Corporal Bugden’s recovery.      

The team have travelled the country and achieved success in numerous competitions, as well as raising more than £5,000 for a variety of charities, including the RAF Benevolent Fund. Not unfamiliar with the prospect of a world record attempt, the team currently hold the record for the longest marathon game of rugby sevens. The game, which lasted 24 and a half hours, attracted a wealth of media attention and raised more than £3,000.
