The London Irish U18s are four fixtures into their season, so it felt like a good point in the campaign to assess their start.

The youngsters kicked off their season in a positive fashion with a comprehensive performance against Gloucester Rugby. A 41-17 victory highlighted the potential that the London Irish U18s possess.

It was a game of fine margins in their next fixture, falling just short against Harlequins. Quins edged the Exiles, winning 21-17.

Round 3 was another agonisingly close fixture, with Irish again falling the wrong side of the scoreboard, this time 17-14. Unfortunately for the young Irish side, the winning penalty kick from Saracens was the last play of the match.

Over the weekend they travelled to take on Bath Rugby and, you guessed it, it was yet another close one. This time, Bath Rugby were the victors, winning 19-14.

“Although the results haven’t necessarily gone our way, I am proud of how the boys have conducted themselves, both on and off the pitch,” said Jack Pattinson, Junior Academy Lead Coach.

“We have been extremely competitive in every match so far this season, and I expect that to continue over the coming weeks.

“Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 and injuries, it has left us a bit short in some positions. But that hasn’t impacted the attitude and the desire from the boys.

“There is still a lot to play for this season and the squad are hungry to get back out there.”

So, a season of close calls so far for London Irish U18s! For their next two fixtures, they welcome Bristol Bears to Hazelwood on Saturday 22 January (kick-off 1pm) and then Exeter Chiefs on Saturday 5 February (kick-off 1pm).
