London Irish’s management says that the investment plans announced by Premiership Rugby will give the club a significant boost as it plans for the future.
The investment from CVC Capital Partners, which was unanimously approved by all 13 shareholder clubs, is expected to be completed in early 2019. The partnership will facilitate major investment into individual clubs as well as Premiership Rugby’s central strategy, and builds on the rapid recent growth experienced by the league over the last five years.
For London Irish the news came just 24 hours after the club announced its own exciting plans to play first team matches at the new Brentford Community Stadium from the 2020/21 season onwards, and Chairman Allan Robson says that the club’s share will be invested into helping the club achieve its potential.
“The investment from CVC Capital Partners shows how much Premiership Rugby has grown over the past few years and that club rugby in England has lots of potential to grow even more,” he said.
“This news comes just days after our own exciting announcement about moving our first team games back into London, which is one of the world’s great sporting cities, and we will use our investment to strengthen all areas as we develop a club that can compete in the Premiership for years to come.
“We are not taking anything for granted in the Championship, where we are up against some improving teams who play good rugby, and our first priority this season is winning promotion.
“But we have to be also planning for the longer term and making London Irish sustainable for the future. We have a world class training base and home at Hazelwood and believe that we have the potential to be one of the top clubs in the country, and this investment can help us achieve that ambition.”
