London Irish HITZ pupils finished their work placement at the Holiday Inn, Shepperton by planning, organising and hosting a hugely successful lunch for over 50 attendees last Wednesday.
The London Irish HITZ project is run from the John Madejski school in Reading, providing educational opportunities for 16-18 year olds NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). It offers the chance to study for a free BTEC Level 1 in Sport and Active Leisure, as well as work on their functional skills up to level 2.
London Irish HITZ uses the core rugby values to improve the personal lives and employability skills of disadvantaged young people, which underpin success in education and work. It uses the inspiration of professional rugby union and its role models to motivate and build a brighter future.
The work placement involved the pupils heading to the Shepperton based hotel every Friday to test themselves in the work place environment whilst learning new skills along the way.
As the placement was such a great success, the pupils were given the chance to show their families and friends, London Irish staff and Holiday Inn staff how far they have come through hosting their very own lunch.
The event, planned by pupil Ben Nutt with the help of head of conferences and events Lisa Warren, ran smoothly with a special appearance from London Irish mascot Digger.
“Every detail of the lunch was planned and implemented by the HITZ pupils. It was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to showcase their development and they duly delivered” said Andy Keast, head of community.
“It was a thoroughly professional and enjoyable lunch, well done everyone involved!”
The pupils’ work experience ranged from sport and leisure roles, working on the reception desk, maintenance, working with the events team and in the kitchen.
The wide variety of roles ensured that the pupils were able to test themselves in a range of environments whilst taking on different responsibilities.
Ross Ferguson, Holiday Inn Shepperton manager added, “For the hotel, it has been brilliant.”
“The pupils are dedicated and enthusiastic to learn each day, which is great to see.”
Congratulations to all the 2018 London Irish HITZ pupils on a fantastic year and for topping the year off in such a spectacular way!
