Declan Kidney has today confirmed that the club, for the 2019/20 season, will be co-captained by Franco van der Merwe, Blair Cowan, Stephen Myler and David Porecki.

Franco van der Merwe is in his third season at London Irish and has made 42 appearances following his move from Ulster Rugby. The former Springbok has captained the side on several occasions and brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Blair Cowan is one of the longest serving members in the current Exiles squad and has scored 23 tries in his 117 appearances in a green jersey. The Scottish international is an influential figure at the club, both on and off the field.

Stephen Myler is the Premiership’s third highest point scorer and is entering his second season at Hazelwood. One of the more experienced members of the London Irish squad, the fly-half will bring plenty of knowledge and know-how to the captaincy role.

David Porecki was the Exiles Players’ Player of the Season for the 2018/19 campaign and this further emphasises his standing amongst his peers. The hooker has made 54 appearances, crossing the whitewash 17 times.

London Irish director of rugby, Declan Kidney, commented “all four players are very well-respected members of our squad and drive the standards by which their teammates will be expected to follow this season.

“Blair, Franco, Steve and Dave bring a wealth of experience to our leadership group and have collectively agreed to share the responsibilities of the captaincy between them for the coming season.”
