London Irish Academy got off to an exciting start for pre-season with a win over Saracens U18s, who currently hold the Premiership U18s title.  Three Senior Academy players were also called up to represent England U18s in a three-match tour in South Africa, with Callum Watson named to represent England at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

London Irish Senior Academy players; Theo Brophy-Clews, Curtis Langdon and Johnny Williams all flew out to South Africa last week with a strong squad full of players with International experience.

Brophy-Clews was named in the starting lineup at fly half against France which saw England U18s beat their French counterparts 15-7. The first win set them up nicely for their second match against host team South Africa A U18s with an impressive 33-8 win with Theo Brophy-Clews and Johnny Williams combining for a great try. England play their third and final match against South Africa tomorrow.

Adding to what has already been a great week for the Academy, was the impressive U18s win over current Premiership U18s Champions Saracens. The team showed their skill outscoring their counterparts four tries to two leaving the final score London Irish U18s 24 – 15 Saracens U18s.

Academy Director Nick Kennedy said of the victory, “It was great to see the hard work from pre-season transfer into the match yesterday, especially in difficult conditions. We still have a long way to go this year and lot’s of rugby to play but as a coaching team we are happy with the start that the squad made.”

Another youngster, who is in his first pre-season at Senior level, is Callum Watson, who has been named to represent England in the Commonwealth Youth Games which will take place this September in Samoa.
