Theo Brophy Clews has enjoyed a stellar campaign for London Irish, and now the talented number-10 along with Exiles centre Johnny Williams is gearing up for England’s Under-20 World Championship opener against Italy.
Locking horns with the Azzurri at the Manchester City Academy Stadium next Tuesday (kick-off 7.45pm) the 19-year-old is keen for his side to get off to a flyer.
“It will be a great opportunity for a lot of the boys as well as myself to put in a good performance on a big stage,” the former Abingdon School pupil told LITV.
“The most important thing is that we work well as a team and get off to a winning start, and hopefully we get stronger as the competition progresses,” he added.
Brophy Clews, a shining light for the Exiles last term, is pleased with his preparation in the build-up to this summer’s festival of rugby.
He said: “We’ll get together as a team in camp ready to go for the World Cup – I’m in good shape and very much looking forward to the challenge ahead of us.”
Speaking about his hopes and ambitions with Irish, Brophy Clews is licking his lips at the prospect of playing alongside experienced duo Topsy Ojo and Aseli Tikoirotuma, who have both pinned their colours to the Exiles mast in recent days.
“I’m really looking forward to working hard this pre-season and I want to continue to learn from the more experienced heads in the squad, and if I get my chance I will be doing my utmost to cement my place in the team.
“I’ve got to earn my stripes just as I did at the back end of last season, and I’ve got to continue to work hard.”
