Today saw the #PoweringTheNHS team go past the 10,000+ meals milestone.

Bogdan Konecki, Head Chef at Hazelwood, has been vital to this effort, leading a team of volunteers in ensuring meals are prepared and cooked in good time, so they can be delivered to the doctors, nurses and care workers at the various hospitals and care homes.

Working closely with Hazelwood General Manager, Fiona McHugh, Bogdan explains how his involvement in this initiative came about.

“I got a phone call from Fiona over three weeks ago and she asked me if I would help out. I said yes of course, and a day or two after we were in the kitchen and getting to work.”

The humble chef is keen to heap praise on his team of volunteers and without them says this could not happen.

“We have a lot of volunteers who come in and help us in chopping up the vegetables, preparing the food and packing of the meals.

“Suppliers have also been supportive in providing produce at a reduced rate. Ultimately though without the financial support of Edward Crossan and Powerday, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

Spaghetti Bolognese, chilli con carne, cottage pie, curry and lasagne are just a few of the nutritious meals Bogdan has made with vegan options also available.

Bogdan is no stranger to cooking large quantities of meals, looking after a squad of rugby players and everyone associated with London Irish, however, cooking over 900 meals a day is a different level.

The popular individual at Hazelwood has taken it all in his stride and says.

“Like many people across the world we want to help. I can’t help in the hospital, but I can help in making sure they have a healthy meal to get them through a long shift or to eat once they have finished their shift.”
