London Irish supporter Matt Merritt says his decision to renew his 2017/18 membership was a no-brainer as the club makes its eagerly anticipated return to the Premiership.

Matt, who hails from Portsmouth, is one of many supporters to have pinned his colours to the Exiles mast as the club gets set to lock horns with the likes of Saracens, Wasps and current champions Exeter Chiefs next season.

Hooked on all things London Irish since 2015, it is the family friendly atmosphere coupled with the accessibility of the players and coaches which has impressed him.

“I came to the St Patrick’s Party in 2015, which was my first time watching a live game of rugby and I have been supporting London Irish ever since,” said Matt.

“I like the interaction between the supporters and the opposing clubs, a trait you don’t see very often in other sports.

“I was an Exiles member last year and I intended to go to as many games as possible, but ended up coming to every home game in the second half of the season. I just couldn’t bear to miss a game.”

Growing up in a football mad city where Pompey is the team to follow on Saturday afternoon, Matt opted to immerse himself in rugby.

“Of all the sports I have come across, rugby has the biggest emphasis on team effort,” he said.

“The players play their hearts out week in, week out and that’s what pleases me the most about the game.

“Everyone plays their part at the club, whether it’s the players, coaches or off-field staff. The club is very active on the website and through their social media which makes it interactive for the supporters.”

With the Premiership fixtures for the 2017/18 campaign due to be announced on Friday 7 July, Matt is relishing the prospect of top-flight rugby back at the Madejski Stadium.

“It’s fantastic to have Premiership rugby back at the Madejski Stadium and I’m sure there will be some cracking matches,” said Matt.

“I’m also planning some away trips and I’ve always fancied spending a weekend in Bath to watch the boys play.”
