London Irish is saddened to learn of the passing of Alex Newberry.
Alex passed away peacefully this morning at home with his wife Clair by his side.
He fought a battle with Alzheimer’s and lung cancer with bravery and dignity.
He was a loving father to Alex and Tom, a devoted husband to Clair, and a faithful friend to so many.
Alex arrived at Sunbury from Belfast in 1970 and soon found a home from home. He was an outstanding servant to London Irish; a talented player, playing first class rugby for over 20 years, including an appearance at Twickenham in the 1980 John Player Cup Final. He played his final first class game against Sale at the age of 40.
He was the Club’s first coach in 1999 following the official reconstitution of London Irish Amateur Rugby Football Club and a former Club President.
He will be sadly missed.
Rest in peace Alex.
