The London Irish community team held a residential rugby camp at the picturesque Horris Hill School in Newbury in July 2018, opening the scope for many more to come.

Hosting 30 boys across two nights and three days, the community team tested the boy’s skills and determination through a variety of sports, activities and games.

“We played tennis, football, cricket, basketball and we got to go swimming as well” said Freddie Powell, residential camp attendee.

“There was a video analysis session and went through the laws of the game. It was loads of fun!”

The camp was designed to mirror a week of a training for a professional rugby player, introducing the boys to strength and conditioning sessions, different recovery methods and analysis techniques whilst also developing their rugby skills.

“The camp was great fun, helped by the fantastic facilities at Horris Hill School” added Andy Keast, head of community.

“The boys were treated to a brilliant accommodation and superb food throughout their stay, so thanks must go to Horris Hill School”.

After lunch on the first day, there was a surprise for the boys as London Irish players Topsy Ojo, Saia Fainga’a and Stephen Myler took the afternoon session of coaching before being tested in a Q&A session by the boys.

“It’s great to be able to give a little bit back to the game and get involved with the grass roots level of the sport” said London Irish fly-half Stephen Myler.

“Hopefully they will learn a few things as we pass on our knowledge of the sport to the next generation”. The London Irish community team will be hosting more residential camps throughout the year, so keep an eye out on our website and social media for more information!
