William Johnson was born in Orange County, California in the city of Tustin. He excelled in American football and wrestling for Tustin High School, becoming the school's first state-place-winner and nationally ranked as a heavyweight wrestler. The Southern California native was then recruited to play gridiron for Harvard University where he graduated with a first in economics. A standout football career (All-American-team selection and ranked top 10 in the country at his position) earned him opportunities after graduation as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots NFL teams. As a rugby convert he had a relatively late and accidental start, playing his first-ever match in January 2007 for the Olympic Club in San Francisco. But size, strength, and athleticism have helped Will make up for lost time. Will earned his first representative honors for the USA when he was selected to start versus Ireland on his 25th birthday in May 2009. His second cap came against Wales where the hard-hitting prop had a notable opening kick-off collision with Welsh captain, Ryan Jones. He arrived in Sunbury in September 2010; joining London Irish from Oxford University where he earned a master's degree in economics and twice represented the dark blue of OURFC in the Varsity Match at Twickenham. Following the 10/11 season, Will is looking forward to representing the USA in the World Cup in New Zealand later this year.
