Peter Hewat grew up in Inverell in New South Wales. As a schoolboy his passion was cricket and it was only when he went to Nudgee College in Brisbane that he started to play rugby. He was quickly recognised as an exceptional talent and was selected to represent Australia at Under 21 level.
Peter joined Manly, the famous Sydney club, where his consistent form at full back and on the wing won him a position in the New South Wales Waratahs squad in the lead up to the 2005 Super 12 tournament.
From making his debut for the Waratahs against Scotland in 2004, Peter scored 636 points in 50 appearances to move into outright second on the all-time list of point scorers for New South Wales behind the great Matt Burke.
Peter represented Australia at Under 21, Sevens and A levels as well as playing for the Prime Minister's XV.
In his final season in Australia, Peter led the Central Coast Rays to victory in the final of the Australian Rugby Championship (ARC).
Peter joined London Irish in October 2007 and went straight into action in the Guinness Premiership and Heineken Cup. He had an immediate impact both in terms of playing performance and points scoring to the extent that he received the 'Best Newcomer of the Season' award at the club's annual player awards ceremony in May 2008.
Since then he has gone on to make a major contribution to the club's progress, appearing in 48 matches and scoring 435 points including 17 tries.
