The London Irish Elite Training Centre, which will be completed by summer 2014, has been purpose built for rugby and will house five full-size pitches, one of which will have an artificial 4G surface, and 12 junior pitches.
London Irish have partnered with Xcel Leisure centre in Walton-on-Thames and Oatlands Park hotel in Weybridge in the bid submitted to the Rugby World Cup organising committee, England Rugby 2015.
A Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Base must include an indoor and outdoor training facility, a gym, an indoor swimming pool and a hotel. These facilities must meet international team training standards and be located in close proximity of one another. Match Venue location has also been taken into account.
London Irish Executive Chairman, David Fitzgerald said: “This is an exciting time for the Club and it is gratifying that England Rugby 2015 have recognised what will be an outstanding facility. We would like to also extend our gratitude to Oatlands Park Hotel and Xcel Leisure Centre for their support in this exciting bid.”
England Rugby 2015 requires up to 50 bases for use during the tournament. These will be confirmed mid-2014 following completion of team visits and selection.
