Marlborough RFC and Oxford Harlequins RFC victorious in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup

London Irish held their exciting under 11 and under 12 grassroots tournament, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup, this weekend at Reading Abbey RFC, featuring grassroots clubs from across the region.

The successful series of nationwide tournaments continues to grow and allow young rugby players to showcase their skills and capabilities in a professionally run environment.

The under 12 festival produced some fantastic rugby for those in attendance, with the outstanding Marlborough RFC playing some fantastic rugby to defeat Reading Abbey RFC to be selected to represent London Irish at the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final in May.

In the Final of the under 11s it was a hard fought match, with the teams pushing each other all the way until the final whistle. In the end, Oxford Harlequins RFC defeated Tadley Tigers RFC.

In addition, the Land Rover Spirit of Rugby Award, which goes to a player or team who demonstrated the values of rugby, was given to Stefan Williams of Reading Abbey RFC, who said:

“I’m really happy to have won the award but it was a team effort. I think I won it for my three tries and tackling, and it shows that you can be small player and still do well!”

Participating players at the festival also had the opportunity to meet London Irish players Topsy Ojo and Sailosi Tagicakibau who took time out of their schedule to watch the young teams as well as offer some coaching tips between games. While at the festival, Topsy commented:

“I’ve been involved in junior rugby since joining Dartford Grammar when I was 11 years old. It’s great to see so many players taking part in the Land Rover Premiership Cup and having played down here this morning, hopefully they’ll then learn a few things when they watch us play this afternoon! Success in rugby starts with building a love for the game and enjoying playing with your mates. From what I’ve seen today, all the players love playing rugby so I look forward to seeing the talent of the future emerge!”

Ben Lee, London Irish Community Manager, commented on the day:

“Reading Abbey were great hosts for this season’s Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup. There were some great skills on show and good team spirit from all. This festival supported by Land Rover is a great opportunity for sides to play against opposition from multiple counties that they wouldn’t usually play against. The winners and runners-up were able to come onto the Madejski Stadium pitch to receive their trophy and medals from 1st XV second row Nick Rouse.”
