Monday 7th April was the start of a busy week for the Community Team. It kicked off with a two day camp at Ellingham & Ringwood RFC and a three day camp at the London Irish training base running simultaneously, the team then moved over to Thatcham RFC for Thursday and Friday.
Despite the damp weather on Monday for the children at London Irish, the rest of the week was full of glorious sunshine; perfect conditions for productive training all week.
Over 300 children attended the camps, with plenty of opportunity to work hard and have fun with all the activities planned out for them each day. Each camp gave the children a chance to train just like the pros, working on specific skill sets throughout their morning and afternoon training; with an hour for lunch in between.
Mike Crump, Head of Community said: “It has been fantastic to see the sheer volume of mini & junior players come along to the camps. It is a great opportunity for them to pick up new skills and work on their specific attributes, establishing themselves with other players that they are not usually accustomed to, therefore bringing them out of their comfort zone to promote their experience of the game."
The London Irish camps aim to focus on the broad skills of rugby including handling, evasion, tackling and agility whilst adopting a very hands on, game centred approach to prepare them for real match scenarios.
We would like to encourage new and old faces to watch out for the Community Team’s next camp venue coming to you in the Summer holidays.
