Tomorrow’s Big (and Last) Day at The Avenue – Update

Even the ‘weather gods’ are co-operating! A warm sunny afternoon is forecast for London Irish’s “Farewell to The Avenue” celebration in Sunbury tomorrow

Groundsmen and contractors have been busy all week ensuring that the grounds look their best and are ready to welcome a large attendance for the ‘double header’ of rugby matches featuring the Wild Geese, senior team of the Amateur Club and the professional Legends.

Among the players scheduled to appear in the latter are: Justin Bishop, Shane Byrne, Bob Casey, Glenn Delaney, Declan Danaher, Kieron Dawson, Barry Everitt, Zak Feau’nati, Simon Geoghegan, Neal Hatley, Paul Hodgson, Malcolm O’Kelly, Paul Sackey, Chris Sheasby and others that are subject to travel arrangements.

As is to be expected from a venue that has hosted hundreds of parties over the past eight decades, the organisers have gone to great lengths to ensure all members of the extended London Irish family and friends are catered for. There will be a children’s corner, a food village with a range of cuisines, and a selection of drinks outlets.

The celebration will finish with a performance by the Bible Code Sundays from the Pavilion balcony overlooking the pitch.

There will be free parking within the Sunbury grounds and additional free parking at Kempton Park (accessible through the main entrance). For those travelling by train, the nearest station is Sunbury (ten minutes walk to The Avenue) and there is a train every half-hour to/from Waterloo.

Because the celebration is a big event in the Topsy Ojo Testimonial Year, admission will be by donation only and for that visitors receive a special A4 size, 84 page souvenir programme. Donations are £10 for adults, £20 for families (two adults and two children under 15), students (15-18) £5.

All those intending to come to the celebration are advised to bring sufficient cash to buy food and drinks as the ground is not equipped with the technology to handle electronic cash payments.
