Spelthorne’s Meals on Wheels customers received an unexpected treat on Christmas Eve when a beautifully wrapped gift containing a box of chocolates, a mince pie, a scarf and a satsuma was delivered with their meal.
The idea of the gift came from Cllr Suzy Webb (Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillor for Sunbury East) who has been personally funding a small gift for Meals on Wheels customers in Sunbury since 2011 using money which included her winter fuel allowance. Cllr Webb wanted to extend the scheme to include all 180 Spelthorne Meals on Wheels customers and approached London Irish Rugby Club and Tesco who were very keen to support the idea.
Cllr Suzy Webb said: “It’s just a small gesture to make the residents smile and to show that we are thinking of them at Christmas - particularly those without family or anyone nearby. I would like to thank London Irish for funding the project and donating the scarves; and Tesco in Sunbury for giving us a super discount on the gifts - both organisations have been extremely supportive. I think it’s been a huge success and it would be wonderful if this could become an annual tradition in the real spirit of Christmas.”
Jackie Roy, PA at London Irish Rugby Club said: “London Irish were delighted to be asked to support this wonderful gift for all customers at Spelthorne Meals on Wheels during this festive period. We would like wish all the customers and staff at Spelthorne Council a very Happy Christmas and Wonderful New Year.”
