There were tries for Mulchrone (2), Stevens, Dorrian, Fenby, Tagicakibau, Lewington, Allinson and Halavatau in a game that saw Irish play with plenty of attacking flair.
Irish enjoyed plenty of early possession in the opening minutes but were thwarted by strong Caverlieri defence. Their line speed proving to be particularly disruptive to the Irish attack.
Myles Dorrian got his side on their way with a penalty on six minutes before Jimmy Stevens crossed for his first try for the Club. Tom Fowlie, making his first start for the Club, made a great break down the right hand touchline, evading two defenders in the process. Prato were penalised for tackling the man without the ball and Irish opted to put the ball in the corner. From the resulting lineout the Exiles expertly drove their counterparts over the try line with Stevens coming up with the score.
Irish’s second score was a piece of individual brilliance from Dorrian, who was also making his first start for the Club. He passed the ball to Bryn Evans who drew his opposite man, to create the hole, before passing to the Australian out half who went waltzing through the defensive line and beat the full back to dive under the posts. He added the extras to give Irish a 15-0 lead.
Andrew Fenby got in on the act just before the half hour mark. Quick hands down the short side saw the Welshman finish in the corner to score his first try for the Exiles.
Credit has to go to the Italians as they pressured Irish with numbers at the breakdown and were awarded a penalty for their efforts. Full back Toby Browne stepped up to kick his side’s first points of the evening.
Irish ended the first half as they started it, in the ascendancy. The forward pack provided the platform and when the ball was eventually spun wide, Sailosi Tagicakibau was on hand to dot down to the right of the posts. Dorrian’s conversion saw Irish head into the sheds 27-3 to the good.
The Samoan flyer was at the heart of the Exiles fifth try with a bustling run before offloading to his centre partner Fergus Mulchrone who scored his first for the club. Dorrian was successful with the conversion to increase the Irish lead to 34-3.
Toby Browne stemmed the Irish scoring flow with his second penalty from just inside the Irish 10 metre line. Irish were penalised for hands in the ruck.
Irish replied immediately with two tries in as many minutes. Firstly Alex Lewington scored his second try in two weeks off a great inside ball off Dorrian. Mulchrone scored his second as Irish went the length of the field. Lewington made the break and passed to Mulchrone who had the simplest of run ins. This try made it 48-6 to Irish.
The visitors enjoyed a good period of sustained pressure for the resulting 10 minutes after the Mulchrone try, but failed to register any points.
Irish punished Prato moments later when Darren Allinson fended off two players to score in the far corner.
The visitors from Tuscany crossed for a try from replacement front rower Nicolas De Gregori before Irish had the final say as the hard working Leo Halavatau powered his way over for a try in the last minute. Darren Allinson added the conversion to make it 60-11.
Irish travel to the Portuguese capital next weekend to take on Lusitanos XV in Lisbon.
