Mike joined London Irish in July 2004 from Bath where he played 220 games over a twelve year period during which he scored 64 tries. He has been capped 72 times by England and played a key role in the country's Rugby World Cup winning squad in Australia in 2003. He was awarded an MBE in November 2003 for his part in that success. He also played for the British and Irish Lions in 2001.

Widely regarded as one of the best strategists in the game, Mike has the ability, whether playing at fly half or inside centre, to influence the outcome of a game quickly and dramatically. Mike has started 47 games for London Irish and scored four tries.

Mike was named Guinness Premiership Player of the Season 2005/2006
