As a talented, teenage sportsman James made an impact in the swimming pool and on the basketball court while taking an interest in rugby as he grew up in Solihull in the West Midlands.
It was when he went to the University of Bath that he decided to focus on rugby. Under the guidance of coach, John Mallett he developed quickly, including playing for the Bath Under 19s. After successfully completing his Master's Degree in Biochemistry James became a full time professional with Bath.
His benefited greatly from his time at Bath where he played with experienced and skilful players like Mike Catt, Matt Perry, Steve Borthwick, Danny Grewcock and Rob Fidler. Indirectly, it was the latter three that helped him decide to move to London Irish in July 2006 for as long as they were around he would only be a second choice for first team action.
His move to Sunbury coincided with selection for the England Saxons team for the Churchill Cup. Last season he played in 29 out of the Exiles' 31 games, a fact that proves that this talented, 26-year-old second row has much to offer to his club and country.
