The London Irish Community Team were delighted to host their rearranged U10s Rugby Festival on Saturday 19th April before the Exiles’ victory against local rivals Harlequins.
Alton RFC, Barnstaple RFC and Reading RFC all had a brilliant time playing against each other in a triangular tournament down at the Elvian School. Each team played a full 20 minute game against their two opponents and scored points using the same scoring system as is used in the Premiership. After some great rugby and sportsmanship displays everybody made their way down to the Madejski Stadium for a special presentation which was held upstairs in one of the hospitality suites. Community Development Manager Philippos Kyriacou announced the results in reverse order, Alton RFC finished third, Reading RFC second and Barnstaple RFC were crowned U10 MatchDay Champions. Joining in the fun were Exile stars Brian Rennie and Wary Fury who enjoyed presenting all the teams with their medals and getting their picture taken with the squads!
If that wasn’t enough excitement for the day, the squads were then invited to play on the pitch at half time in front of a 10,000 strong crowd in two exhibition rugby games. Champions Barnstaple RFC played second place Reading, whilst Alton took on a Barbarian side made up of all three squads. Speaking about the day Community and PR Officer Zoe Mathieson said “We’ve had a brilliant day today and have seen some fantastic rugby both at the Elvian School and on the pitch at half time! I’d like to thank all three teams for taking part and for really entering into the festival spirit.” Commenting on their match day experience John Knill, Barnstaple U10s coach commented “Our lads had an amazing time which they will not forget in a hurry! The efforts you guys went to, to make all the lads feel welcome and special is much appreciated.”
