The London Irish Community Team had a great time in Bournemouth last week running two half term MasterClasses with Oakmeadians RFC. Community Coaches Ben Thurlow and Matt Allen joined Community Development Manager Philippos Kyriacou helping over 30 young rugby players improve their rugby skills and techniques.
From Tuesday 29th ' Thursday 31st May the Community team made Glenmoor school their home as they worked with the 7-17 year old participants. Over the first two days the MasterClassers were split into their age groups mixing fun and hard work to develop their rugby skills. The older groups were coached on various aspects of the game focusing particularly on the technical side. The group worked specifically on rucking technique, tackling technique and team communication. The younger guys worked hard on improving their passing and running skills taking part in lots of fun tag games to put their new skills into practice. The final day focused specifically on girl's rugby training for the 12-17 year old age group. The girls were put through paces in a very intense session focusing on passing, rucking, tackling plus various SAQ drills.
Prizes were given out on all three days for effort, determination, enthusiasm and commitment to learn. The lucky winners were Abbie Taylor, Marcus McClean, Joshua Norris, Tom Moreland, Lewis Eallet, Louis Changchao, George Armstrong, Oliver Tarbard, Adam Higgins, Lizzie Tarrant and Lauren Horsley. Each winner won a special piece of London Irish merchandise which was presented to them by Matt, Ben, or Philippos.
Speaking about the MasterClass Philippos said 'We've all had a brilliant time down here in Bournemouth. As with all our MasterClasses the emphasis was very much on improving rugby technique in a fun and positive environment. Everyone has worked really hard and I hope they'll be able to utilise their new skills next season.'
