London Irish began their pre-season fixtures with a bang this evening with a 44-10 victory over Championship side Nottingham at Meadow Lane.

Debutant Andrew Fenby scored a first half hatrick and added a fourth score 10 minutes before time to steal the headlines. Academy players Gerard Ellis, who had an excellent match, and Scott Moore also crossed in the six try victory.

Irish made the perfect start to the match with a try inside two minutes. The Exiles found holes in the Nottingham defence to put themselves on the front foot. Myles Dorrian showed brilliant vision and ability to chip the ball across to the far wing for the waiting Andrew Fenby who dotted down with his first touch for the Club. Dorrian’s conversion gave Irish a 7-0 lead.

The Australian fly half nailed two further penalties minutes later to edge the Exiles further clear. His opposite number cut the deficit to 10 points with a well struck penalty on 19 minutes after his forwards dominated the contact area to win a penalty.
The rest of the half belonged to Irish and their Welsh signing Andrew Fenby. He showed great pace and power as he ran in from 60 metres, fending off two defenders. Gerard Ellis showed his ability on the floor to initially turn the ball over.

After securing a brace of tries he dotted down for his hatrick on the stroke of half time. Topsy Ojo, who was a late inclusion for Fergus Mulchrone showed great hands to put Alex Lewington through the gap. Lewington offloaded to Fenby who ran in under the posts.

The second half was a much tighter affair. Nottingham dominated for long periods and got their reward on the hour mark with a try to Ryan Hough.

The Irish reply was emphatic with a Nottingham old boy instrumental in the lead up. Alex Lewington got the ball in space and darted past four defenders before offloading to first Dec Danaher who passed to Gerard Ellis who powered his way over.
Scott Moore touched down for the Exiles sixth try two minutes before the end after a fantastic break from Topsy Ojo and good support work from Nic Rouse ensured Moore could complete the victory.

London Irish travel to Adams Park next Saturday to take on London Wasps in the second of their three pre-season matches.
