The Wasp fly half controlled the game and nudged over a drop goal three minutes from time to confirm the victory.
It was the final day of November and a cold one at that. Wasps came with a game plan and it was extremely effective. Scrum for penalty opportunities, flood the breakdown and kick long to the corners.
The opening exchanges were very even, both sides were looking to play but you could certainly sense a fair amount of cautiousness in the air as neither wanted to make an early mistake.
James O'Connor got his side off to a great start with an early penalty goal on three minutes. The Exiles intensity was duly rewarded with the first points of the match.
The ever reliable Andy Goode was faultless off the boot early on with two well struck penalty goals to momentarily give his side the lead. The set piece was an area Wasps targeted and that is where they were awarded the penalties on both occasions.
Irish's back row trio of Sinclair, Cowan and Hala'ufia were working well together in attack and defence with Hala'ufia carrying plenty of ball,
early on, into the heart of the Wasps defence.
O'Connor restored parity on 19 minutes after sustained pressure before Wasps began to dominate.
The visitors were awarded a string of penalties metres out for the Irish posts and opted for the corner rather than the posts. After the ball was re-cycled, Andy Goode chipped the ball over the Irish defence into the in goal area. The ball bounced awkwardly for O'Connor, who was adjudged by referee Dean Richards to deliberately knock the ball on. The Australian was sent to the sin bin and Wasps were awarded a penalty try which was converted by Goode.
In O'Connor's absence, Shane Geraghty kicked a penalty three minutes from half time to give Wasps a 13-9 lead at the break.
Ofisa Treviranus came on for Chris Hala'ufia after the interval but was powerless to stop Andy Goode adding three more points to the score. Mistakes and in-discipline was costing Irish points and possession.
The three Wasps points signalled the re-arrival of James O'Connor from his spell in the sin bin and he continued where he left off in terms of his attacking intent. The Wasps defence held firm and Goode and Elliot Daly used their long boots to good effect to overt danger.
Approaching the last quarter Irish upped their intensity and were awarded two kickable opportunities. O'Connor landed the first and the second drifted just wide. With four points in the game we were set up for a tense finale.
The outstanding Andy Goode nailed his fourth drop goal attempt of the game three minutes from time almost assure his side of victory. The away side lasted a late Irish onslaught on their own goal line to come out victorious.
Brian Smith's side are in Amlin Challenge cup action next weekend with the visit of Stade Francais.
